Central Wanchai Bypass
Sustainable infrastructure that brings long-term and enduring value
Leighton Asia has long been involved in the Government’s strategic plan for the harbour front and road network upgrade at the north shore of Hong Kong Island, starting in 2003 with the Central Reclamation Phase III contract. Our works for the Central-Wan chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link project (CWB) scheme is an extension of the Government’s plan to accommodate future growth in our ever-evolving city.
The CWB project traverses six densely populated commercial and residential districts and runs for 4.7km with approximately 4km of underground tunnel to alleviate the heavily congested commercial hub.
Apart from being the first Hong Kong tunnel to adopt the latest fire protection technology, the project’s state-of-the-art ventilation and air purification system also purify the air exhausted from the tunnel to a higher standard
The two contracts being delivered by Leighton Asia for the CWB project include the Central Interchange and Route-Wide System and Commissioning.
Works included a 220-metre-long tunnel section, tunnel buildings, realigning and reconstructing existing roads, fit out of the tunnels, plus the installation and commissioning of all tunnel services. The link is expected to cut travelling time between the eastern and western ends of Hong Kong Island from about half an hour to five minutes.
The CWB Scheme is one of Hong Kong’s most significant green urban design that is geared with many unique eco features. Apart from being the first Hong Kong tunnel to adopt the latest fire protection technology, the project’s state-of-the-art ventilation and air purification system also purify the air exhausted from the tunnel to a higher standard.
